Armed police have shot a man dead at a house in north Belfast in a separate incident to a handgun attack on a mother and her two children in the county. Police entered the home in the Milltown area at around 11.50pm on Monday night, following a report that an intruder had been threatening people inside. The latest incident happened at the same address where a mother was badly injured on Sunday night in a stabbing and her two children, who are both under the age of seven, were also injured in the attack. The man who was shot has been named locally as 40-year-old Kevin McConnell. He is from the Ashfield Park area of the city and has been arrested in connection with the earlier attack. Emergency services were called to the home on Harte Avenue at around 10.50pm on Monday after the armed response officers were called to reports of a man inside. It is understood that the man ran from the house and was chased and arrested by the officers, who fired at him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been informed. Formal identification procedures are due to take place but it is understood that the man who was shot is the same man who attacked the mother and her two young children on Sunday night. In the earlier incident, police said the mother was badly hurt in the attack and both children were in a serious condition at the Royal Victoria Hospital on Monday. Detectives from the Serious Crime Branch are investigating both incidents and have appealed for anyone who saw anything to contact them at the incident room on Woodvale Road in the city. The attack on the mother happened at around 10.45pm on Sunday. The children, who are three and one-year-old twins, were both injured when the woman was attacked. Detective Sergeant Bryon Sykes, a PSNI officer in the Serious Crime Branch, said the incident started outside the front door of the home and the victim ran inside to try to get help. “She was then stabbed and the young children were injured when they tried to help their mother,” he said. The children, who are both under the age of seven, were taken to hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. DPS Sykes appealed for anyone who saw the incident to be359ba680
